COMBERMERE car meet for PRE-1990 cars | June 2024
June 2024's Cars & Caffeine at Combermere car meeting was for pre-1990 classic cars. Due to the meet's overwhelming popularity and the huge turnout of cars old and not-so-old at the previous gathering, the organisers decided to introduce an entry criteria for this one, in a bid to keep numbers more manageable especially given the finite amount of parking that is available outside the Old Piggery Cafe.
Pre-1990 cars (or at least those designed pre-1990) was the entry requirement for this one, and most likely it'll be set as post-1990 for a future meet (keep an eye on the Facebook page for more details).
As expected, fewer cars overall turned up, but as they were all of pre-1990 design and/or...

The full name for this show is the Classic and Performance Car Spectacular 2024, held at Tatton Park in Cheshire, but old-timers like me still refer to it as the Tatton Park classic car show 2024, and as usual it is mainly the older cars - vintage and classic - that will feature in this bumper upload. WILL IT FIRE UP? WHY NO OIL PRESSURE? Under the bonnet at OCC HQ

Garage time at OCC HQ, will the old Dodge fire up after fuel supply problems recently at a classic car meet? And why is there no oil pressure showing on the gauge? Regulars will know that the 1947 Dodge's engine was very reluctant to start at a car meeting recently, in this video I delve into the carburettor to see what's going and whether the problem(s) relate to that or something else. Two classic car events took place at Gawsworth Hall in Cheshire during May. We're off to a popular car meeting at the Royal Oak pub in Worleston, near Nantwich in Cheshire, in today's video. Our steeds for the day were our 1947 Dodge WC pickup and the MX-5 Mk1. As can happen with older vehicles, our day out at the Royal Oak didn't entirely pan out as we thought it might, although returning any old vehicle to the road that hasn't seen m...

    1:20:04 I really like the Standard Flying V8 too. Its exhaust manifolds are right on the top, and almost in the valley. I assume that this arrangement of the exhaust manifold is to get the exhaust out of the block more expediently, rather than have the exhaust go through runners in the top of the block to the other side. Having the exhaust go through runners in the block to the other side is the arrangement in the 1932 Ford 221 cubic inch flathead V8, and the 1930-1932 Oakland/Pontiac 251 cubic inch flathead V8. This has the downside of increasing the risk of overheating, and eventually causes heat induced cracking in the bridges of metal in the top of the block between the exhaust runners/exhaust outlets in the top of the block and the tops of the cylinders.

    I think it was a good call from the organisers to put age limits for the cars on the meet. It is quite possible that we may not have seen the Riley Lynx if that had not been done. What a survivor that is. Some others we have not seen before like the E-type. At least I don't remember seeing that before. Great to see a Pantera in seventies colours, it looked all original to me. The little Arbarth looked great but the driver seemed to have folded themselves up to get in it! Loved that chopped Ford, looked like a barrel of laughs even if it didn't go particularly quick! Great video Rick thank you for sharing it with us. 👍👍

    The new entry criteria is a great improvement. The Riley Lynx has to be the car of the meet, closely followed by the Crossley, the pale green Imp and the maroon and grey RR. Having owned an A30 I cannot believe the orange A30 travelled so far through Europe, including over the Gotthard Pass; a remarkable achievement by car and driver!

    The Cadillac Allante has a fascinating history in that it was the first Cadillac roadster since the 1930s and had a ludicrous manufacturing process. The bodies were designed and built by Pininfarina in Italy and then were flown from Turin to Detroit by Boeing 747s for the installation of the US chassis and engine. The Allante had front wheel drive unusually and a V8 engine and, surprisingly, had a respectable life span from 1987 to 1993. It's purpose was to compete with European rivals like Mercedes and Jaguar and it sold in decent numbers as a halo project but I doubt if GM made any money from it.

    Just a little correction on a location. The photo at 5.02 is actually in New Zealand. In Australia, Hillmans stayed Hillmans and didn't get rebadged as Humbers. However the Singer Vogue of the 1960's did become the Humber Vogue in Australia. The car on the right is a Valiant from Chrysler Australia from about 1973. That's only 5 years after it was possible to buy a Humber Super Snipe VA in Australia with Chrysler badges on the lower wings. Interestingly, Chrysler Australia toyed with a V8 version of the Super Snipe, probably to the point of a prototype. The car on the left probably dates the photo more accurately, being a Chrysler Sigma from 1980-ish, this being more or less a Mitsubishi Galant. On the photos in general, of course you post what you are sent, but notably absent were early Snipes and Pullmans and the very entertaining to drive (because of abysmal handling) Commer COE vans. Also the proportions of Singers and Sunbeams seemed very high to my Australian eyes. Would British eyes concur with that? Cheers.

    • @davidtaylor351
      @davidtaylor351 3 дня назад

      Yes the cars have the old black NZ number plates from the mid 60s to the late 80s. In NZ the Sigma was marketed as the Mitsubishi Sigma. And it is likely the Aussie Valiant was NZ assembled. As most Valiants sold here were assembled by Todd Motors. They were the NZ importers and assemblers of all Rootes Chrysler and Mitsubishi vehicles. In earlier times. They produced Humber badged versions of the Hillmans, alongside the Hillmans. Because, under the old import licencing rules. By creating a separate car model. It enabled them to import more components. Thus, build and sell more of, essentially the same car. Plus there were tax incentives that applied to local content levels. Most NZ assembled vehicles were around 35 to 40 % local manufacturing content. Some were a little higher.

The r.h. photo was taken (I think) on a Singer Owners Club rally, treasure hunt or meet at The Blue Lagoon Cafe, probably somewhere in Middlesex or Hertfordshire. It advertised itself as a roadhouse catering for motor club rallies. Maybe someone old enough might remember it? Excellent collection of photos, as usual!

    Great video and presentation buddy. You’ve got some beautiful cars in your collection. I’ve got a couple of Japanese-made lithographed tin cars, but nothing like the quality of your cars. I’m a Model T guy myself, and have been looking for a vintage toy “T”.
